About Wisdom: Emily Carris-Duncan created Wisdom while quarantined during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the format of an improvised geometric quilt, Carris-Duncan engages the history of Black women’s roles in craft production. Interested in plant-based dyeing processes, the silks in Wisdom are dyed using cutch, walnut, chestnut, and eucalyptus, their muted tones the result of an experimental mordant or chemical binder used to fix the dyes to the fabric: iron liquor derived from slave shackles.
