OUTWARD PASSAGE

Outward Passage is the beginning of an ongoing study about the impact and legacy of the Trans-Atlantic Slavery. In this series I focus on the coastline of England’s three major portcities London, Bristol, and Liverpool. I used long exposures to emulate the painted British seascape, which draws on the visual representation of this critical time period, prior to the invention of photography. Each image in the series is coupled with a title that refers to British involvement in the Transatlantic Slave Trade. My desire is to create an open space for the viewer to consider the legacy of slavery and the way in which we remember this event that has no photographic record, an event, which in many ways, has been washed away.

The title Outward Passage refers the route slave ships took along British waterways to the Atlantic Ocean on their journey to the West Coast of Africa.
